Lesley GarrettBorn in Doncaster, Yorkshire, in 1955. Her mother was her main early musical influence and Lesley spent many evenings singing at the family piano with her two sisters. She decided on a singing career after experiencing opera at the age of 15. |

In 1977 she was accepted at The Royal Academy of Music and in 1979 she won the Decca Kathleen Ferrier Prize and joined the National Opera Studio. Within a year she had made her official stage debut at the Wexford Festival as Dorinda in Handel's Orlando. For two years her career flourished but then she was forced to take a year's
break due to a kidney complaint and the breakdown of her first marriage. However,
she returned to work and continued to build up an impressive list of appearances.
